Melinda's Gluten Free Goodies is a brand that can be found in some IGA stores,Coles and Woolworths supermarkets, and health food shops. The distinct pink packaging is instantly recognizable on the shelf. I have tried and enjoyed several products from this range, both savoury and sweet. Favourites include the Tuscan style Risotto Cakes mix in which you only need to add vegan cheese and egg replacer. The Sundried Tomato and Spinach Muffin Mix is also excellent and comes with a vegan (ie dairy and egg free options) version in the recipe instructions. My partner has found that adding a tomato chutney to this mix helps to add moisture. Without it, the muffins tend to be a bit too dry.
In regards to the sweets, we have enjoyed the Apple and Rhubarb Crumbles which go great with vegan vanilla icecream, served up in ramekins. To keep it vegan, make sure to use a dairy-free spread like Nuttelex instead of butter.
Other winners include the Chocolate Fudge Brownies (using egg replacer and margarine instead of butter) and the Chocolate Walnut Slice.
As for the crackers, I love the Poppyseed crackers. Steer clear of the other varieties, however, as they have cheese in them and are therefore not vegan.
There are a few other products by this company that are gluten free, with vegan options, but I have yet to try them. I will get round to it, though!
I need to move to Australia. All of these brands that you are showcasing are just flat-out making me jealous :)
ReplyDeleteThe lemon slice is good too, although different than the lemon slice we grew up
ReplyDeleteCara - it is usually the other way round! So many vegan and gluten free brands in the USA and so hard or impossible to find down here.
ReplyDeleteK - I don't think I have ever had lemon slice as a kid!
